About The Teacher
Dorothy originates from Georgia, known as "the peach state," and has been involved in education since 2004. She has taken on various roles throughout her career, each contributing to her wealth of experience. She began her journey working in elementary schools within low-income communities, where she engaged in afterschool programs, provided tutoring, and supervised LeapFrog Reading labs for students from kindergarten to fifth grade.
Dorothy later ventured out by teaching English to adult learners during a stint in Mexico. She also dedicated her time to volunteering with high school students in the TalentSearch programs offered by one of the HBCU universities in her hometown of Fort Valley, Georgia. Her role involved traveling to different universities, collaborating with students to learn of their interests so as to advise them on possible college/career opportunities.
Afterwards, Dorothy worked as a substitute teacher, substituting all grade levels to better understand her preferred teaching level. After moving to California, she began working with a non-profit organization as a mentor program coordinator, collaborating with adults and marginalized youth as to assist them in developing their mentee-mentor relationship. Eventually, she became a middle school teacher, and then transitioned to working with adults as an English Language Development (ELD) teacher. Today, she serves as an independent study high school teacher and lead teacher.
Dorothy finds fulfillment in what she does. She takes great joy in working with her students and collaborating with her colleagues.
